Sustainable Agriculture Support Foundation (SASFo) project is located in Machakos county, Masinga sub-county, Kangonde ward. Its 26km from Matuu town, off Kivaa-Embu road. 120km east of Nairobi. It’s approximately 2100m above sea level, longitude 37*16’0.01” E, latitude -1*31’0.01” S, average temperature 19*c. the climate is mild and generally warm and temperate, the summers here have a good deal of rainfall while winters have very little.
Machakos county has an estimated population of 1.3 million and receives 800mm of rainfall per annum, Machakos county is experiencing rapid urbanization with strong growth in consumption expenditure, demographics of its population comprising of 68%youth, most of the household are poor and depend on subsistence farming and an estimated per capita income of $ a day.
The initiative started due to inefficiencies in agriculture, agribusiness value chain, drought, poor governance, and county policies, that has constrained supply in basic commodities and the situation is rapidly expanding. The land is expensive but we depend on other counties for basic commodities like foodstuffs which boarder Mt Kenya region.
The biggest problem faced by our people is food insecurity due to lack of water and over-reliance on rainfall despite having large trucks of fertile land, poor methods of farming and inadequacy in farm inputs which are cursed by limited resources and in turn have led to persistent poverty.
This is mainly attributed to lack of training among farmers on modern ways of increasing food production and the channel through which they can be acquired.
However, this situation can be adversely changed or even completely reversed through water supply, temperature controlled and cheap way of farming, certified inputs, training and use of modern agricultural farming practices through irrigation, smart farming and technology, we will provide models for hunger and poverty alleviation across the region.
